During this month of Black History, the school’s Black Student Union (BSU) hosted all kinds of events to celebrate black excellence.
BSU contributed to the East blood drive on Feb. 4. In the group’s Instagram post promoting the drive, they listed the theme of the event as “Black Excellence is in our Blood.”
“The Red Cross is honoring the vital role blood donations from those who are Black play to meet the broader transfusion needs of patients and those with sickle cell disease,” the post stated.
Additionally, BSU members celebrated a Spirit Week that lasted from Feb. 12-20, and revolved around many black cultural themes and activities. Members of the group also spoke at the Feb. 14 pep rally, and participated in “Read Your Heart Out” by going to local elementary schools and reading to younger students. During Spirit Week, on Feb. 19, the group held a bake sale to raise money their upcoming trip to Washington, D.C. in April. The purpose of the trip is to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) near the nation’s capitol.
Rounding out the month’s events, on Friday, Feb. 28, there will be a movie night featuring Rush Hour. Tickets are $5. There will be hot dogs, popcorn, candy, chips and soda for sale, as the event is also a fundraiser for BSU’s big trip to D.C. in April.
