East has a new head principal in training, ready to take over after Principal Mikki Smith retires in June. On March 20, the School District Superintendent announced that the new person will be current Assistant Principal Patrice Haste.
“I am super excited. I’m very humbled and a little nervous,” Haste said. “It’s a big job, but I also know I work with a lot of really great educators who want the best for our students, so they’re going to continue to do the best that they can, and that makes everything easier.”
Haste will be stepping into the role on July 1. This transition comes as Smith prepares to retire after 15 years of dedicated service. While change and new leadership can be nerve-wrecking, Haste expressed a sense of enthusiasm for the opportunities ahead.
“I am excited about getting to know new people, getting to know even more students,” Haste said. “I’m also excited about getting to make positive change, so listening to staff and students and community members and hearing what they need, just like hearing what they need to be successful, and doing whatever I can to help make positive change.”
As Haste steps into her new role, she emphasizes her openness and commitment to communication.
“My door is open,” Haste said. “If students and staff have concerns or questions or just want to share ideas, please let me know. I’m always interested in that. Let me know the cool things that are happening and what or where areas we can improve. And you know, I think especially for our students, like taking advantage of all of the really cool opportunities that East has, and you maybe don’t even know all of the different things that are going on here.”
