Sitting around all summer isn’t the only option, East is hosting summer science classes over the summer. There are courses such as environmental science with teacher Emma Watermolen.
“It’s (the environmental science summer class) all about learning about our outdoor world and doing a ton of labs to help understand it,” Watermolen said.
And it’s not just Watermolen, science teacher Mary Bridget Nowicki will also be teaching a summer course. The class, Environmental Science, is where students can be outside and learn about stream science, how to identify trees and more, Nowicki said.
“It’s (the Environmental Science summer class) outside all day long which is great. It’s all labs, which is also great. We talk about stream science, so we get in the stream and collect little bugs that live in the stream and then determine the health of the water because of it. We learn how to identify trees, and measure trees and figure out how old they are. We look at soil and different kinds of soil and why would plants live in different soils and look at the different components of the soil, do a lab on that,” Nowicki said.
The cost? There is none! The summer science classes are free to everyone who wants to sign up for the entirety of the course.
Students who are interested in either class should talk to Watermolen in room 3302 or Nowicki in room 3309 before May 8.
“People can sign up by talking to me or Ms. Watermolen, and there is an online sign up, (and) we have a Google classroom. So, they just need to come and talk to us, and we’ll get them in the Google Classroom and signed up,” Nowicki said.
